8TIMBER SLING PACK 6L (REVIEW)

Occasionally a company will reach out and offer a collaboration, to try-out and review their gear. A few months ago 8TIMBER did just that and sent over a care package including several gear items, one of which was the 8TIMBER SLING PACK.

THE SLING PACK

So I’ve been using the Sling Pack for EDC and it been great once I’d made some basic mods so it worked better for me and how I wanted to use it.
As a standard the SLING PACK is an 6L mini rucksack with features you might find on a backpack.

FIRST OUTSIDE

The main shell is a nice 400D ripstop nylon, the base and other stress points is Hyperlon and the back is padded, reinforced and stiffened air mess. I thought this was over engineered given it’s a small sling but trust me, once the bag is loaded that consideration is appreciated.

HYPERLON WATERPROOF BASE

The shoulder sling is well thought out and stitched to the main body of the pack at the centre, allowing an easy left or right swap by simply unclipping at the bottom and re-clipping to your preference.
The shoulder sling is lined with air-mesh and well padded with segmented close cell foam, this helps the sling conform to your shoulder and improves air flow.
There’s a single discreet, webbing loop ready for your keys and the usual shoulder strap dangles.

To the left of the pack is 3 rows x 2 columns of NATO friendly MOLLE.

3 ROWS X 2 COLUMNS OF NATO MOLLE

To the front of the SLING PACK are twin parallel gear rails with a small 1.5 x 2.5 hook and loop field.

LOVING THE 1.5X2.5 HOOK & LOOP FIELD

Still to the front and behind the gear rails is a really useful slash pocket with dual, left and right access depending on whether you’re a lefty or righty when wearing a sling. of course dual access means this pocket has a pass through which is really useful for carrying larger unexpected items like a wet weather jackets or a sweat shirt. To the right is an elasticated, gusseted pocket ready for a small water bottle and folds flat when not used.

GOOD SIZED SLIP BOTTLE POCKET

The SLING PACK has nice structured boxy vibe and design that reminds me of a; 58 Pat, military respirator pouch, I found it to be a good size for summer EDC with options to strap, shock or MOLLE more to it if you want more options.

CHUNKY FIDLOCK CLOSURE

The lid has a nice Hyperlon carry handle and a chunky, glove friendly FIDLOCK snap shut, magnetic closure, which is more secure than I first thought it would be, requiring a tug down to disengage and open “Nice”!

SUPER PADDED CARRY HANDLE

INSIDE

Clean, simple and hiviz is the vibe here. The SLING PACK has one main compartment with a single elasticated pocket at the back. The lining is light grey in color, which makes gear much easer to find if it slips out of its organisation, (I’ll get to that soon) all seams are tapped to keep water out.

SIMPLE HIVIZ INTERIOR

Yep I said it, “There is no organisation???” what are you going to do? break-out the ingenuity and the hallowed GREYMAN TACTICAL RIGID MOLLE PANEL.

YOMP NOTES EDC ORGANIZATION CONFIG

As an EDC sling pack the 8TIMBER wouldn’t work for me in its standard configuration in all honesty so I had a lot of fun sorting something out for myself, using a 10.75 x 7” RMP and a 7x3 VANQUEST STICKY PANEL. This works nicely with room left over but you do need to run it vertically (none-standard) as apposed to; horizontally which is (standard). The STICKY PANEL is securely attached using shock-cord.

OTHER MODS

From the factory the 8TIMBER is pretty straight forward but does give us options to customise.
We’ve already talked about interior but there were a few bits I wanted to add outside.

VANQUEST ZIPPER PULLS MAKE THE FRONT SLASH POCKETS MUCH EASER TO ACCESS

I’ve added a pair of (red) VANQUEST Spartan zipper pulls, cos they match the red 8TIMBER brand and make the front slash pocket easier to access.

SHOCKCORD A BETTER SOLUTION FOR CARRYING AN EXSTRA JACKET ETC

I’ve added 3mm shockcord to the gear rails. I like this for carry extra clothing if needed.

I'VE ADDED KEY KEEPER THAT I CAN TUCK INTO THE FRONT SLASH POCKET

For keys I’ve swung a dual ended key keeper from the top row of MOLLE, this can be tucked in the top of the slash pocket and BAM you super convenient front door, car key access.

IN CONCLUSION

8TIMBER SLING PACK INC MY EDC CONFIGS

The 8TIMBER SLING PACK is a great little bag for EDC and summer day hikes. Despite its size it’s big enough to carry everything you need (with a mod or two) and small enough to dissuade you carrying what you don’t. It’s clean and simple but can be spec-up for more nuanced organisation and personality.

Now I’m known for preferring the tacticool, military-chic aesthetic but here I really appreciated the urban Sci-Fi, Star Trek away-team vibe of the 8TIMBER SLING PACK.

All-in-all a nice little bag from a new young and inventive company, worth supporting I think.
