GORUCK BULLET EDC - Featuring the GR1 Field Pocket

GORUCK BULLET EDC feat GR1 FIELD POCKET

I think GORUCK make the best EDC rucksacks. At the moment I’m using the GORUCK BULLET as my go to EDC ruck. It’s small, neat clean, simple and light being made of 500d as apposed to the 1000d of other rucks in the Goruck range. I’ve posted about GORUCK’s boxxy utility chic design before, here, here and here so won’t go over old ground again other then to say; these bags offer just enough features for us to be able to configure how we need and no more, so it’s time to breakout the ingenuity.

GORUCK BULLET EDC TOTAL LOAD-UP

The GORUCK BULLET 10L is the smallest rucksack in the range being only 10liters in capacity, I originally intended it as a running bag which it still is, when I’m not using as the EDC. I think the BULLET is named that because of it’s shape, yep it looks a-bit like a bullet unlike the usual GORUCK offering which very box fresh. The interior is also different, no MOLLE field??? Which means a config for this rucksack will defiantly need a MOLLE panel for EDC gear and gear pouches to be mounted to, if not, we’re heading for; EDC, minus MOLLE orga chaos at the bottom of the ruck and we can’t have that.

GREYMAN TACTICAL PANEL 8.875X17 MADE FOR THE JOB

Rigid MOLLE panel (RMP)

For this I turned to GREYMAN TACTICAL, they make panels to fit a wide range of rucksacks etc, including a rigid MOLLE panel (RMP) specifically for the 10L Bullet (8.875 X 17 RMP). I usually like to strap the RMP down inside the rucksacks if I can. One of my aims is a config where once fitted everything stays where it is and nothing falls out.

USING A GRIM LOC TO SWING THE RMP 8.875X17 FROM THE BULLET HYDRATION BLADDER LOOP

In this case I’ve achieved this by using a GRIM LOC attached to the panel with a VANQUEST Anchor Wraps Hook and Look (HAL) strap then using the Bullets own hydration bladder loop to anchor it.

GRIM LOC PANEL MOUNTING DETAIL

This works very well as it means the RMP can be swung out to access the Bullets Internal slip pocket, which I mostly use for note books and other light paper work. This solution will also work on the GORUCK Bullet 15L and GORUCK Ruckers.

PANEL ARRANGEMENT

I have a favourite, tried and test layout, for panel arrangement which is;

TIER 1 - POWER, LIGHT & COFFEE

Tier1 - Most used and easy of access critical. Left to right; VANQUEST Hydra Pouch for an auxiliary power source for charging phone etc. Mounted to the front of this is pouch for a PEZEL head torch, not so important now spring is on its way. Next to this is a second Hydra pouch for a KLEAN KANTEEN thermos and the morning coffee!

TIER 1 - PETZL HEADLAMP POUCH ATTAHED VIE A GRIM-LOC TO THE FRONT OF THE VANQUEST HYDRA POUCH

TIER 2 - FIELD POCKET & STICK ADMIN DOING THE HEAVY LIFTING

Tier 2 -  Secondary gear important / necessary but not used everyday so occasionally removed. This gear is carried in a GORUCK GR1 Field Pocket,. These are great tough little SOBs but are notorious for their lack of organising detail. But I really like this pouch so what do I do?

CONFIG-A-GO-GO!

VANQUEST STICKY ADMIN PANEL REMOVED

A few months ago VANQUEST sent me one of their new STICKY ADMIN PANELS (V-SAP). This is pretty much as described. A 5x7 HAL panel which includes a large zipper slip pocket and to the front; x4 elastic retainer loops for smart phones, multitools, knives, pens and flash lights. It has hook-and-loop to the back for similar attachment but best of all, it’s just the right size to fit inside the Field Pocket as an admin panel : ) I tried this but I wasn’t keen : ( The weight of the tools it carried made it heavy and as I haven’t worked out a good way to anchor it, it felt likely to fall out just when I didn’t want it to.

GORUCK GR1 FIELD POCKET / MOHL-AIR - MY FAVOURITE LACE PATTERN

So thinking outside the box or in this case, the Field Pocket, I wondered if by using a VANQUEST Hook-and-loop adapter I could attache the V-SAP to the outside? It took me a while to workout how to attach the adapter to the MOLLE on the back of the Field Pocket. The usual problem is GORUCK MOLLE is none standard width so it can be difficult to get gear other than GORUCK gear to fit (naughty) However in this case I got around it by using shock cord!

I’m really pleased with how this worked out. All is secure and as the Field Pocket is stowed inside the Bullet rucksack everything is as secure as any rucksack intergrade admin. It’s not entirely perfect, I’d preferred it inside the Pocket but in this case, I’m not going to let perfect get in the way of done! The tools are nice and easy to grab and if I do want to remove sometimes, I can!

MODULARITY A-GO-GO

THE CONTRADICTION AND RMP or The late solution to the config party

I mentioned GREYMAN TACTICAL earlier in this post. I told you that they make Rigid MOLLE Panels for a wide range of rucksacks etc. Part of that etc is they make a 8x6 RMP that’s just small enough to fit the Field Pocket. So with the help of some shock cord once again, this might be used as an organiser insert? It still needs work, the problem of how to get it to secure to the inside of the pocket remains but if successful, I’ll share with you good people as always.

GREYMAN TACTICAL 8X6 FITS THE GR1 FIELD POCKET VERY WELL : )

GORUCK Bullet EDC load out

IN CONCLUSION

The GORUCK Bullet EDC is small light and nimble and given its 10l capacity can’t be over stuffed, keeping gear minimal. Its modularity means when I want to use for a cross-run, none essentials can be replaces with a 2L hydration bladder. Done, done off for my cross-run.
This is one of my favourite configs, you know... until the next one : )

SMALL, NIMBLE AND EASY TO TOSS ON THE BACK SEAT OR HIDE UNDER A RESTAURANT CHAIR

When I write these posts I don’t really expect anyone to follow exactly and I agree, some ideas are a-bit over the top but I do hope some of the ideas are useful for your own projects.
