Not every jacket has a silver lining, but this one does. ODIN 9 WORLDS INFINITY SHELL JACKET. If you’re a pessimist and you absolutely know everything from an; avalanche to snow, wind, rain earthquake, death and dismemberment are going to happen to you on your next high altitude adventure this is the jacket you need to be wearing when all that good stuff definitely happens to you : )

BUT SERIOUSLY

This is a really high-end jacket, I’m quite happy to say it’s the best I’ve every seen in regards to understated design, functionality and attention to detail with regard to construction and indeed, all aspects of this most excellent jacket. It’s build for the worst this planet can bung at it and for the very best adventures and mountain rescue professionals, who choose to put their trust and bodies within it.

So the question is... what the hell am I doing with it? Do not ask me, it was all HELLY HANSEN’s idea. But I do know great gear when I see it and in this jacket, by Odin’s one good eye, I see great gear.

EARLY SPRING BUT SNOW IN THE AIR - LOVE THAT




The ODIN 9 WORLD is construed from HELLY HANSEN’s very own; LIFA INFINITY PRO fabric. It’s waterproof, breathable and is made without any added chemical treatments so it’s good for the planet and easy to care for. Basically throw it in any standard issue washing machine. This also means it’s going to last, great news for me. I do not follow fashion, when I find something that works and like, I stick to it.

Unless HELLY HANSEN want this jacket back, it will be a key pieces of gear for many years to come, for all my Snowboarding, Hiking, Rucking and low/level Mountaineering adventures. It's going to be a long time before any landfill or recycling unit sees this jacket.

FIT, MOVEMENT and TAPPED SEAMS



Fit and movement are very important for a high performance jacket like the ODIN 9 WORLDS. The tailoring is such that without being too bulky and over sized this jacket is happy to work with layering, the sleeves and shoulders are articulated simply put, this means the jacket has been tailored as though the arms are in the air as apposed to by your sides, this means that if you’re ice climbing for instance the sleeves wont be pulled half-way up your arm. This is a key feature for pretty much all mountain activities except Apres ski perhaps : )



TAPPED SEAMS

FULLY TAPED SEAMS ARE IMPORTANT FOR A FULLY WATER PROOF, BREATHABLE JACKET


As you know the more seams a jacket has the more chance there is of it failing and leaking, the ODIN only has the seems it needs, they are sharp and tight and all fully tapped giving moisture no chance of sneaking it's way in.

1 - FEATURES INC SUPPER-MASSIVE CHEST POCKETS*

YEP THAT'S A FULL SIZE VACUUM FLASK!


I’m going to say the ODIN 9 WORLDS has 5 pockets if we include the small convenient smart phone sized pockets inside the super massive chest pockets, of which there are 2 other side of the main zipper.

THESE MASSIVE POCKETS HAVE CUSTOM ACCESS FROM THE BOTTOM UP


AND THE TOP DOWN


These are the biggest most useful pockets I’ve ever seen. They are gusseted at the bottom so have a capacity. I had a lot of fun seeing what I could get in them. For your ref they have an internal size of 61cm H x 21cmW. The 5th pocket is on the left shoulder and is big enough to stow any smart phone large or small or maybe better still a radio with room for the aerial.

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the pockets. Their position on the jacket, ease of access while using a ruck in sack, size, design and the quality of the zipper pulls. It feels that as much attention to detail was applied to this part of the jacket as was the super high tech environmentally considerate materials it’s made of, this makes me feel all warm inside.

2 - WRIST LOCKS*

HOOK & LOOP CUFF LOCKS



Hook and Loop integral wrist locks (The hook is moulded into the rubberised strap, not sewn on, harder wearing.)

3 - ZIPPERS

CAPPED AND ANGLED SEAMS DEFLECT WATER FROM THE ZIPPERS



REVERSED ZIPPERS KEEP WATER OUT AND WARMTH IN



All pockets have reversed, water repellent and capped zippers reducing the chance of water getting in those pocket to a minimum and where necessary pockets have dual zipper pulls for top to bottom custom access.

4 - HOOD & HEM ADJUSTMENTS

HOOD ADJUSTMENTS FROM THE BACK



Three way hood adjustment. This hood is made plenty big enough for a helmet, Snowboarding Ice climbing or other so that adjustment is useful when it’s only a wooly hat it’s keeping dry and super wide visibility is always important on busy mountains. The hood doesn't seem to be wired however the constuction design and the fact that the RECCO reflector is stationed in the peak makes it seem like it does. There is also an elasticated hem with adjustable pull cords being cleverly concealed inside the super massive chest pockets.

5 - RECCO RESCUE

RECCO REFLECTOR ALSO STIFFENS THE JACKET HOOD


RECCO rescue recovery reflector is integrated into the hood of the ODIN 9 WORLDS JACKET it’s beyond the scope of this post to describe how it works but it does, the technology is supported in most major contents and gets you found when you’re lost. Even under several meters of snow!

6 - VENTILATION*

UNDER ARM VENTILATION


Under arm ventilation (Pit zips) Late season hot, sunny afternoons can be too much for even the most breathable fabrics. The ODIN 9 WORLDS has the most discreet under-arm / pit zips ventilation I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t for the black zipper pulls I might have missed this feature altogether, as I almost did. As with the main chest pockets the zipper can be opened from the top or bottom so we can custom that ventilation just how we need it.

7 - REINFOREMENT

Micro bartacks, tapped and reinforcement. All the majors seams and stress points that I could see have been meticulously bartacked then where necessary, tapped to keep water proof. On Only and detailed inspection this includes the smartphone s pockets that are actually inside the main pockets.

MICRO BARTACKS - TAPPED & REINFORCED


This is as it should be but when I looked for it I didn’t really expect to find it. For me this is impressive, if this much attention has been applied here we can probably trust that the rest of the jacket is up to scratch as well.

8 - BAR / COAT HOOK

HYPERLON COAT-HOOK


Last-but-by-no-means-least This jacket has a super lightweight, super durable Hyperlon coat-hook! We all know that without a coat-hook it’s the hood that ends up being hung from that rusty bar hook in front of your stool and before you know it, you’ve worn a hole in the hood of your key mountain survival asset. Yep you laugh but as I said, the devil’s in the detail.

IN CONCLUSION THEN



Mankind hasn’t set foot on Mars yet, so until we do, we can go for a quick jaunt up Everest and be back in time for breakfast, Just so we have a valid reason to use this most excellent jacket, in something close to the terrain and environment it’s designed for. I.E. the worst conditions God, Buddha and Mother Nature can throw at it. “Come on is that all you got? Gimmy some more."
Because with the power of ODIN 9 WORLDS on your back you can take it all day long.
