HOW TO MAKE A HUMIDOR WITH A PELICAN 1060 MICRO CASE
I developed and made my PELICAN CASE humidor about a year ago. I’ve been using it everyday since and my cigars have stored very well so it looks like this is a great little solution for those who don’t want to spend a fortune on an off the shelve issue / issue.

WHY DO YOU NEED THIS?
Obviously if you don’t ever smoke cigars you do not need this in your life, but if like me you do enjoy a cigar on special occasions you will need a humidor to keep your stash in peek condition and ready to smoke when you are.

WHATS A HUMIDOR THEN?
Just to cover the basics, if your cigars dry out or get wet they will be ruined, they have to be stored at the correct humidity in an airtight and waterproof case. This case will have a system to keep your cigars at the required humidity which is around 65% - 75% depending on how airtight your humidor is where you live in the world you live and where you keep it etc.

So this is a humidor, a near airtight box to keep cigars in that has a means to regulate humidity within.

BOVEDA HUMIDITY CONTROL
I mentioned above that the humidity within your humidor has to be maintained at the correct levels. I’m not even going to start to talk about what a hassle this used to be, all you need now is a BOVEDA HUMIDITY CONTROL PACK. Is will keep everything just as it needs to be. In my case and as my PELI CASE is airtight so I use a 69% BOVEDA HUMIDITY CONTROL PACK. and keep it at 20 Celsius / 68 Fahrenheit (Yep that’s room temperature then) Basically it will keep the humidity at the desired levels by absorbing excess moisture or indeed releasing moisture if needs be. How this works I haven’t a clue but it does so that’s good enough for me : ) You can find out more [HERE] A BOVEDA pack lasts me a about 6 months before it needs replacing and I know when this is because the pack will start to get lumpy and gritty, when this happens, replace as soon as possible.
So In short, an airtight box is all you need, the BOVEDA packs have made it that simple.

THE PELICAN CASE

I decided that I wasn’t going to use this as a travel humidor but as a base to stash my cigars until required therefor I thought this was a good size to hold maybe up to 10 cigars along with the BOVEDA pack, although usually I only have 4 or 5 cigars at a time leaving room inside the case for air to circulate a bit.

I have removed the the impact foam in the lid of the case to make room for a BOVEDA METAL HOLDER. This isn’t really necessary but it is pretty slick to have a dedicated home for the BOVEDA pack. This aluminium holder comes with a mounting kit giving us the option of fixing with hook and loop or magnet, for me neither of the these options worked. Basically they just would not stick so I used some 3M COMMAND ADHESIVE TAPE, which has worked very well!
CEDAR WOOD - WHATS THAT ABOUT? Traditionally good humidors are made from Cedar wood, this is because Cedar wood has a wonderful smell that complements the cigars aroma and some say it enhances it. The PELI case is made from plastic and has a rubber like insert, great for protecting delicate electronics, not so good for seasoning your cigars and as it’s an integral part of the lids water proof, air tight seal I’ve not tampered with it.

However I’ve found that I can use the cider wood liner that can be found inside cigar tubes, to line my humidor, this is not perfect and doesn’t look great but it does work, protecting my cigars from the rubbery plastic smell of the PELICAN case. This is an OK solution for now but I would like to make a nice cedar wood liner someday.
